What travel documents do I need for Romania?
For US citizens, a valid passport is sufficient—just make sure it remains valid for at least 3–6 months after your arrival in Romania. A blank page is required in your passport for entry/exit stamps.

What currency is used in Romania?
Romania’s official currency is the Romanian Leu (RON). The approximate exchange rate is 1 EUR ≈ 5 RON and 1 USD ≈ 5 RON. You can check the current rate online.
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but ensure your card is enabled for international use. You may also be asked to enter your PIN when paying.

What is the spoken language in Romania?
Romanian is the official language and is of Latin origin. If you speak another Romance language, you may recognize some words. English is commonly spoken in cities and tourist areas, and increasingly even in rural villages.

Will I have internet access during my trip?
All restaurants and accommodation included in your tour offer free and reliable Wi-Fi. Also, in all vehicles used for daily transportation, you will have free wi-fi.
We will also provide an e-sim card for a designated person in your group’s party, if your phone supports it, so you’ll be reachable throughout most of your trip, though phone signal which may occasionally drop in remote or mountainous areas. If a specific location on your itinerary lacks coverage, we’ll notify you in advance.
What kind of power plugs are used in Romania?
Romania uses Type C and Type F plugs (same as most European countries). Be sure to bring a compatible adapter for your devices. You can check online for a list of plug types by country.
Is tipping expected in Romania?
Tipping is not mandatory, but it is appreciated for excellent service. It’s entirely at your discretion.

Greetings in Romania are often gender-specific. Men usually shake hands. Women who are familiar with each other may kiss on both cheeks, starting with the left. A polite nod or verbal greeting is fine in formal or unfamiliar contexts.
What is Romanian etiquette like?
- Punctuality isn’t always strictly followed, but people dislike being kept waiting. A 15-minute grace period is common.
- Politeness and indirect communication are valued. Avoid direct confrontation and deliver criticism gently.
- Smoking is banned indoors in public places. However, it is allowed on outdoor terraces. Be considerate of non-smokers.

Plane tickets & boarding passes: Don’t forget these—especially for low-cost carriers like WizzAir, RyanAir, or EasyJet. Check in online at least 3 hours before your flight to avoid airport fees. Many of these airlines offer mobile apps for storing digital boarding passes.
Driver’s License: If you have one, it is a good idea to bring it with you, along with a national ID. A driving license may be required for some activities such as driving an ATV. But for transportation, you’ll be in good hands with your private driver during your trip.
